NIKKI SIXX: 'The Heroin Diaries' Will Tell It Like It Was
April 27, 2003The Ear magazine spoke with MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist Nikki Sixx about his soon-to-be-published book of journal entries, dubbed "The Heroin Diaries", which he expects to have out by Christmas. "There are two different ways to look at it," Sixx said. "One is a bird's-eye view of a story, 'The Year In A Life Of…' and then there's also an up-close personal view of addiction. It actually lets you in and go, 'Wow, this is what this drug can do to you. This is what drugs can do.' Look, I'm not a sober cop, I'm not AA, I'm not a pro-go get loaded guy. I'm just telling a story of what it was and what I was at that time. It's valuable in the sense that it covers many different aspects, it can be just outrageous like the William Burroughs memoir, 'Junkie', or it could be quite telling. It all depends on where you are at in your own mind."
When asked how the book was coming along, Sixx said, "Well, you know because it is diaries they are finished, but what I wanted to do was add a kind of cohesiveness to it. A lot of times when you're under the ultimate painkiller and have been through all of the situations I was in, it impairs your thoughts and memories and everything doesn't always make it from the mind to the paper and for me that's the creative beauty of it. It's not just like memoirs with all these random scribbling, I'm kind of piecing it together and weeding it out what was actually happening and what it was about. We're finding a common thread through it all, which is kinda interesting, and the reason why VH1 wanted to do a special on it. Now, I don't want to give anything away."
